NEWS FLASH!!!  Second Saturdays in Media...

 

Tuscarora Lapidary Society is now participating the Second Saturday program in Media, PA.  This is a monthly event with galleries, businesses, and the TLS Skill Center are open from 6pm to, at least, 9pm.  The event is coordinated by the Media Art Council

 

The 2009 dates will be published here when available.


General meetings begin at 8:00pm at the Springfield Township Municipal Bld. (Powell Rd.) Delaware County, PA.


January 14th, 2009.  TLS members Frank Warner and Pete Santucci presented a program on refractometers. 


February 11th, 2009.  The DVD "Guide to Black Opal" by Keith Rigby will be presented.  The DVD includes the topics of evaluating rough, dopping and removing stones presented by various experts.


March  11th, 2009.  Jim Walker presented a program on mining Tsavorite in Kenya.  Jim talked about the three months that he spends mining this gemstone from his own mine!  The talk included a DVD and discussion of prospecting, mine operation, relevant geology, bandit raids, and the wildlife in the area.


April  8th, 2009.  The April meeting was devoted to a "Silent Auction".  Members brought items such as lapidary rough, tools, mineral specimens, and other lapidary oriented things.  All bidders were successful on something, but as in all auctions not every tactic worked.  All proceeds went to TLS/


May 13th, 2009.  TLS member Frank Schaffer presented a talk on his experiences in the world of diamonds.  His family has been in the business for three generations so Frank's knowledge is wide and deep.

LAPIDARY INSTRUCTION

 

TLS offers a series of classes and workshops on lapidary subjects in Media, PA,   Instruction is presented at the TLS Skill Center, 105 W. Jasper Street.  The Center is comprised of work space for cutting, trimming, grinding, sanding, polishing, and faceting. TLS provides suitable lapidary materials for beginners.  Classes are also offered in many jewelry arts such as beading, wire wrapping, and metal work.

 

SUMMER CLASSES

 

Classes begin at 7:30pm and end at 9:30pm except for weekend workshops.

Tuesday (Class begin July 14th)

 

Opals   Hear from the Opal Master himself.  Learn how to value and everything else about opals. Prerequisite: Beginning cabochons. Class limit 10.  Instructor: Bill Mattis.  Tuition $50
 
 
Thursday (Class begin July 16th)

Beginning Cabs   Open to new students and those honing their skills in cutting and polishing stones.  Instructor: Gary Cummings & Betty Margerum.  Class limit 10.   Tuition $50

 
 
 Workshops

 

"Finishing" (July 18 & 19; 10 to 4 pm) for students who need to finish a channel piece or an intarsia piece, or a faceted stone that wasn't finished in class. Limit 5 per project. Overseers: Kathy & Gary Statton. Tuition for all $10. 

Wirewrap 1-day Workshop: (Sunday, August 2;  9 to 4 pm) Limit 10. Wirewrapping a faceted stone setting in a ring and a pendant. Instructor:  Ellen Schwarzkopf. Tuition $50 

 
Wirewrap 2-day Workshop: (August 29 & 30;  10 to 4 pm) Limit 10. First day wirewrap, second day beaded necklace. The project is wirewrapped chandelier earrings or it can be a pendant or stations on the necklace. Your choice. Instructor: Nancy Marks. Tuition $95
 
Beginning Cabs  2-Day Workshop: (September 12 & 13;  9 to 5 pm) Open to new students and those honing their skills in cutting and polishing stones. Instructor:  Frank Warner. Tuition $95
