The Tuscarora Lapidary Society is a non-profit educational corporation, and Pennsylvania Purely Public Charity, organized to encourage and teach the science and art of lapidary (the cutting and polishing of gemstones), as well as the arts and sciences associated with lapidary interests.

Come explore gem cutting, jewelry making, and related arts and sciences with us.

We teach the journey from rocks to gems to jewelry.

The TLS Educational Program

TLS offers classes to adults, at least 18 years of age, interested in pursuing lapidary and jewelry arts. Most classes are ten weeks, one two-hour class per week. Some are five weeks or weekend workshops. Most evening classes are held between 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM, primarily on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. The hours for daytime classes vary from term to term. Four terms are offered each year.

Classes and workshops are held at:

The TLS Education Center
24 Upland Road
Brookhaven, PA 19015

The TLS Education Center is comprised of a fully equipped lapidary shop with work space for cutting, trimming, grinding, sanding, polishing, and faceting. Workspace is also available for instruction in many jewelry and related arts.

Typical classes:  Beginning Cabochon Cutting is offered every term. The schedule of other classes varies from term to term and may include Faceting, Wire Wrapping, Beading, Silver Jewelry, Precious Metal Clay, Intarsia, Channel Jewelry, Opal Cutting, Chain Maille, Cloisonn√©, and Glass Beadmaking, among others.  Descriptions for many of our courses may be found at Course Descriptions.

Instructional Staff:  The Education Center is staffed by TLS member-instructors who volunteer their time and talent to advance lapidary and related art forms. They are talented hobbyists, not professional lapidaries. Their reward is to see joy on students’ faces when they complete their projects. A few courses and workshops are taught by non-member guest instructors.

Schedule: For a schedule of upcoming classes, click on SCHEDULE.

Basic tuition is $60 per five-week course, and $120 per ten-week course. In some courses there is a modest additional fee for equipment and supplies. Courses taught by guest instructors have an additional fee to help cover the cost of the instructor. Tuition and fees for weekend workshops and open shop sessions are as posted for each such event.

Prerequisites, Materials and Tools:  No previous experience is needed unless a prerequisite is noted. TLS supplies all of the materials, equipment and tools needed for beginning cabochon and faceting courses. In some classes a basic tool list may be recommended.
