TLS Fall 2017 Class Schedule

TLS offers classes to adults interested in pursuing lapidary and jewelry arts. No previous experience is needed unless a prerequisite is noted. In some courses and workshops there is an additional charge for supplies and equipment.

The Fall Class Session will begin Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the state-of-the-art TLS Education Center, 24 Upland Road, Brookhaven, PA. Click HERE for directions and a map.

Pricing for classes is listed for members (M) and non-members (NM). Membership requires completion of Beginning Cabochon or Faceting classes, participation in two TLS monthly meetings and willingness to participate as a volunteer in TLS activities. Non-members have priority in beginning cabochon and faceting classes. 

REFUND POLICY: If you wish to withdraw from a class, workshop, or open shop session, you must notify the Registrar by phone or email. Payment will be refunded 100% if you withdraw before the course, workshop, or open shop session begins. For multi day courses (not workshops nor open shop sessions), payment will be refunded 80% if you withdraw before the second class. No refunds are given after the second meeting of a multi day course. No refunds are given after the first day of a multi day workshop. No refunds are given for missed open shop sessions (Exception: Members may receive a 50% refund, if requested, after missing an open slab-saw session.)

The registration deadline is Friday, September 1, 2017 unless otherwise indicated. Acceptance or rejection notices and a list of required materials will be sent after the deadline, prior to class. Students are enrolled in the order that checks and registration forms are received. Please note: Checks for full tuition must accompany the registration form in order for a registration to be accepted. WEEKDAY CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

MONDAY (no class November 6)

Beginning Silver Jewelry: (10 weeks beginning September 11) 7:30-9:30PM. Limit 10. Learn basic silversmithing techniques and complete one or more projects, which could be a pendant, ring, or bracelet. Instructor: Linda Green. Assistant: Peter Santucci. Tuition: NM $120/M $60. Materials-fee, payable to instructor, approximately $40, depending on projects chosen.

Advanced Cabochons: (10 weeks beginning September 11) 7:30-9:30PM. Limit 8. Members only. Instructor: Stacey Segal. Tuition: $70. Supply and tool list.

TUESDAY

Beyond Beginning Silver – Patina, Texture and Fusing: (10 weeks beginning September 12) 10AM-1PM. Minimum 6, maximum 10. Highs and lows play an important role in jewelry making. This class will explore how surface creation and shadow play are incorporated into jewelry design by making plates for added texture, using reticulation for added wrinkles, and use of patinas to add color. Solid knowledge of sawing and soldering is required. Guest instructor: Marthe Roberts/Shea. Tuition: NM $330/M $240. Required supplies to be purchased in advance will cost approximately $75. Faceting: (10 weeks beginning September 12) 7:30-9:30PM. Limit 6. Cut clear gemstones with many flat planes (facets). Instructors: Dave Groncki and Gary Statton. Tuition: NM $120/M $60. Supply and tool list.

Channel Jewelry: (10 weeks beginning September 12) 7:30-9:30PM. Limit 10. Prerequisite: Previous silver course. Learn how to create jewelry in which gemstone material fills spaces (channels) between strips of silver. Instructor: Kathy Statton. Tuition: NM $120/M $60. Silver supplies will be available from the instructor at an approximate cost of $20-$40 depending on the size of your design. Supply and tool list.

WEDNESDAY

Pâte de Verre Glass: (Two-day workshop, Wednesday September 27 & Friday September 29) 9AM-5PM. Limit 5. Members only. Learn an ancient method of kiln-casting finely crushed glass in open plaster molds. Instructors: Frank Warner, Lisa Laffend, and Linda Lakitsky. Tuition: $90. Supply and tool list.

Opal Cutting: (Five weeks beginning September 13) 7:30-9:30PM. Limit 5. Prerequisite: One TLS Beginning Cabochon course. Cut and polish opals, learning to make the most out of the opal rough you have. Instructor: Sue Garrett. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, approximately $15. Basics of Chain Maille: (One-evening, Wednesday, October 11) 6-9PM. Limit 10. Learn basic techniques of working with jump rings. This workshop covers opening and closing jump rings, chain maille terminology, jump ring materials, their properties and the effect different materials have on weaves. Instructor: Sharon Parsons. Tuition: NM $40/M $20. Supplies will be available from the instructor at an approximate cost of $7. Supply and tool list.

Chain Maille Christmas Ornaments: (Five weeks beginning October 25) 7-9PM. Limit 8. Join us for some pre-holiday fun! Using variations of Celtic, European and Japanese weaves, make chain maille ornaments to hang on your tree or in your windows. Planned projects include Santa, Snowflake, Star, Wreath and Tree. Instructor: Sharon Parsons. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Supplies will be available from the instructor at an approximate cost of $30 for all projects. Supply and tool list.

THURSDAY (no evening classes November 2)

Beginning/Intermediate Cabochons: (10 weeks beginning ***September 21*** Note the change in the start date which was 9/14 ) 10AM-Noon. Limit 8. Learn how to cut and polish rounded gemstone shapes. Open to new students and those honing their skills in cutting and polishing cabochons. Instructors: John Chickadel and Linda Lakitsky. Tuition: NM $130/M $70. Supply and tool list.

FRIDAY

Sphere-making: (Two-day workshop, Friday October 13 & Friday November 10) 9AM-5PM, plus one initial 2-hour meeting at a time in September to be set in consultation with the class. Limit 4. Members only. Learn how to make spheres out of lapidary material ‘by hand’. Instructors: Doug Wiggins and Eugene Awot. Tuition: $115. The cost of a preform will likely range between $40 and $60.

Intarsia: (Saturday, September 16) 9AM-5PM. Minimum 3, Maximum 10. Create a design using thin slices of colored stones. Instructor: Kathy Statton. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Bring your own Super Glue; stones will be supplied.

Opal Cutting: (Sunday, September 17) 10AM-5PM. Limit 5. Prerequisite: Beginning cabs. Cut and polish opals, learning to make the most out of the opal rough you have. Instructor: Sue Garrett. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, approximately $15. Supply and tool list.

Marble Making: (Two-day workshop, Saturday & Sunday, September 23-24) 9AM-5PM. Limit 6. Prerequisite: One TLS glass bead-making or other lampworking workshop. For beginners and those with some marble-making experience. Learn to make perfect spheres at the torch out of clear and colored borosilicate glass. Instructors: Frank Warner and Tami O’Connell. Viking Knit: (Saturday, September 30) 10AM-4PM. Limit 4. Learn an art of wire weaving to create bracelets and necklaces out of copper or silver wire. Instructor: Jill Kilmartin. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, approximately $20. Supply and tool list.

Intermediate Bead-Making: (Two-day workshop, Saturday & Sunday, October 7-8) 9AM-5PM. Limit 8. Prerequisite: One TLS glass bead-making workshop. Topics will include heat control, dot control, special stringers, use of silver leaf, and the silver glasses, among others. Instructors: Frank Warner and Lisa Laffend. Tuition: NM $160/M $100. Supply and tool list.

Cloisonné Enamel Jewelry: (Two-day workshop, Saturday & Sunday, October 14-15) 10AM-5PM. Minimum 5, maximum 10. Students will learn the ancient technique of cloisonné with the use of fine silver and pure gold foils to create a piece of cloisonné enameled jewelry. Guest instructor: Joan Strott-Alvini (www.glassongold.com). Tuition: NM $220/M $160. Materials fee, payable to instructor, approximately $35. Supply and tool list.

Bead Stringing: (Two-day workshop, Saturday & Sunday, November 18-19) 9AM-5PM. Limit 10. Learn to make knotted bead and pearl bracelets and necklaces on silk as well as beaded earrings, chain necklaces or badge/eyeglass holders, and woven bracelets. Instructor: Pam Wingrod. Tuition: NM $120/M $60. Some supplies will be available from the instructor at a cost that could range from $30 to $50. Supply and tool list.

Open Cabbing: (Mondays: 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/23, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4; Tuesdays: 9/19, 10/17, 11/14, 12/5; and Saturdays 9/9, 10/7, 11/11, 12/9) 10AM-4PM. Limit: 5. Prerequisite: One TLS beginning cabbing class. Fee: NM $33/ M $27 per day. Supervisors: Christy Potter, Linda Lakitsky, and Stacey Segal. Supply and tool list.

Open Slab Saw: (Mondays: 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/23, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4; Tuesdays: 9/19, 10/17, 11/14, 12/5; and Saturdays 9/9, 10/7, 11/11, 12/9) 10AM-4PM. Members Only. Prerequisite: Must be certified for slab saw use. May be taken concurrently with open cabbing. Supervisors: Christy Potter, Linda Lakitsky, and Stacey Segal. Fee: $5 per half hour, $10 per hour. Indicate date and preference for AM or PM. Actual times will be scheduled by the Registrar.

Open Metalsmithing/Soldering: (Mondays: 9/11, 9/25, 10/9, 10/23, 11/13; Saturdays: 9/30, 10/21, 11/18, 12/16) 10AM-4PM. Limit 10. Prerequisite: One TLS silver class or equivalent (as approved by Supervisor). Supervisors: Stacey Segal and Maxine Burkholder. Fee: NM $33/M $27 per day.

Open Torch (Bead-making): (Saturday and/or Sunday, September 9 & 10, October 28 & 29, December 2 & 3, December 9 & 10) 9AM-5PM. Limit: 10. Prerequisite: One TLS glass bead-making class. Fee: NM $44/M $36 per day. Coordinator: Frank Warner.
