TLS Winter 2017 Class Schedule

TLS offers classes to adults interested in pursuing lapidary and jewelry arts. No previous experience is needed unless a prerequisite is noted. In some courses and workshops there is an additional charge for supplies and equipment.

The Winter Class Session will begin Monday, January 8, 2018 at the state-of-the-art TLS Education Center, 24 Upland Road, Brookhaven, PA. Click HERE for directions and a map.

Pricing for classes is listed for members (M) and non-members (NM). Membership requires completion of Beginning Cabochon or Faceting classes, participation in two TLS monthly meetings and willingness to participate as a volunteer in TLS activities. Non-members have priority in beginning cabochon and faceting classes. 

REFUND POLICY: If you wish to withdraw from a class, workshop, or open shop session, you must notify the Registrar by phone or email. Payment will be refunded 100% if you withdraw before the course, workshop, or open shop session begins. For multi day courses (not workshops nor open shop sessions), payment will be refunded 80% if you withdraw before the second class. No refunds are given after the second meeting of a multi day course. No refunds are given after the first day of a multi day workshop. No refunds are given for missed open shop sessions (Exception: Members may receive a 50% refund, if requested, after missing an open slab-saw session.)

The registration deadline is Tuesday, December 26, 2017 unless otherwise indicated. Acceptance or rejection notices and a list of required materials will be sent after the deadline, prior to class. Students are enrolled in the order that checks and registration forms are received. Please note: Checks for full tuition must accompany the registration form in order for a registration to be accepted. The Courses for Monday

(W18-S-CA-E) Advanced Cabochons: (10 weeks beginning January 8) 7:30-9:30PM. Members only. Limit 8. Instructor: Stacey Segal. Tuition: M $70. Supply and tool list.

The Courses for Tuesday

(W18-M-SA) Beyond Beginning Silver – Orbed Pendant: (10 weeks beginning January 9) 10AM-1PM. Minimum 7, maximum 10. Prerequisite: Solid knowledge of silver soldering and sawing. This class will make a pendant by creating a silver sphere and then embelishing it with tube set CZs. Guest instructor: Marthe Roberts/Shea. Tuition: NM $330/M $240. (W18-S-OP-T) Opal Cutting: (One-day workshop, Tuesday, March 6) 10AM-5PM. Limit 5. Prerequisite: Beginning cabs. Cut and polish opals, learning to make the most out of the opal rough you have. Instructor: Sue Garrett. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, approximately $15. Supply and tool list.

The Courses for Wednesday

(W18-J-CB) Basics of Chain Maille: (One-evening workshop, January 24) 6:00-9:00PM. Limit 10. Learn the basic techniques of working with jump rings. This workshop covers opening and closing jump rings, chain maille terminology, jump ring materials, their properties, and the effect different materials have on weaves. Students will complete a pair of basic chain earrings. Skill Level: Beginning. Instructor: Sharon Parsons. Tuition: NM$40/M $20. Materials fee, payable to instructor, $7. Supply and tool list.

 

(W18-J-CM) Chain Maille – Byzantine Bootcamp: (5 weeks beginning February 7) 7:00-9:00PM.  Limit 8. Come learn and create with the ancient Byzantine chain maille pattern. Instructor: Sharon Parsons. Tuition: NM$60/M $35. Required supplies are to be purchased in advance (cost will depend on metal selection).  Supply and tool list.

(W18-G-PJ-W) Jewelry Pâte de Verre: (Two-day workshop, Wednesday, February 21  & Friday, February 23) 9AM-5PM. Limit 6. Members only. Learn an ancient method of kiln-casting powdered and finely crushed glass to make items suitable for use in jewelry. Instructors: Lisa Laffend, Linda Lakitsky, and Frank Warner. Tuition: M $90.  Supply and tool list.

(W18-J-EB) Wirewrap Earrings: (One-day workshop, Sunday, January 21) 10AM-4PM. Minimum 3, maximum 8. Make earrings and learn the basic techniques used in wirework. Instructor: Elaine Pataky. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, $25. Supply and tool list.

(W18-S-SP) Sphere Making: (Two-day workshop, Saturdays: February 17 and March 17) 9AM-5PM. Plus one initial meeting at a time in January to be set in consultation with the class. Members only. Limit 4. Learn how to make spheres out of lapidary material ‘by hand’. Instructors: Doug Wiggins and Eugene Awot. Tuition: M $115. The cost of a preform will likely range between $40 and $60.

(W18-J-RI) Intermediate Wirewrap Ring: (One-day workshop, Sunday, February 18) 10AM-4PM. Minimum 3, maximum 8. Prerequisite: Beginning wirewrap class or equivalent experience. Build on your beginner skills to create a wire woven ring. Instructor: Elaine Pataky. Tuition: NM $60/M $35. Materials fee, payable to instructor, $25. Supply and tool list.

(W18-S-GB) Gem ID – Introduction: (One-day workshop, Saturday, March 10) 10AM-4PM. Limit 6. Learn basic techniques including hardness, scratch, specific gravity and optical observation tests used to aid in the identification of cabbing and faceting rough materials. Instructor: John Chickadel. Tuition: NM $65/M $40.

(W18-S-GA) Gem ID – Intermediate: (Two-day workshop, Saturday & Sunday, March 17 & 18) 10AM-4PM. Limit 6. Learn more about identifying species and varieties of gems using the basic tools of the trade and the GIA property chart. Instructor: Pete Santucci. Tuition: NM $125/M $65.

(W18-S-OC) Open Cabbing: (Mondays: 1/8, 2/5, 3/5; Tuesdays: 1/23, 2/20, 3/20; and Saturdays: 1/13, 2/3, 3/3) 10AM-4PM. Limit: 5. Prerequisite: One TLS beginning cabbing class. Fee: NM $33/ M $27 per day. Supervisors: Christy Potter, Linda Lakitsky, and Stacey Segal.  Supply and tool list.

(W18-S-SS) Open Slab Saw: (Mondays: 1/8, 2/5, 3/5; Tuesdays: 1/23, 2/20, 3/20; and Saturdays: 1/13, 2/3, 3/3) 10AM-4PM. Members Only. Prerequisite: Must be certified for slab saw use. May be taken concurrently with open cabbing.  Supervisors: Christy Potter, Linda Lakitsky, and Stacey Segal.  Fee: $5 per half hour, $10 per hour. Indicate date and preference for AM or PM. Actual times will be scheduled by the Registrar.

(W18-M-OM) Open Metalsmithing/Soldering: (Mondays: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26; Saturdays: 1/20, 2/24, 3/24) 10AM-4PM. Limit 10. Prerequisite: One TLS silver class or equivalent (as approved by Supervisor). Supervisors: Stacey Segal and Linda Green.  Fee: NM $33/M $27 per day.

(W18-G-OT) Open Torch (Bead-making): (Saturday and/or Sunday, January 13 & 14, February 10 & 11) 9AM-5PM. Limit: 10. Prerequisite: One TLS glass bead-making class. Fee: NM $44/M $36 per day. Coordinator: Frank Warner.
